In 2010, she was one of the first 30 employees at Square and its first communications hire. She worked on the team that designed and executed the comms strategy for Square's IPO. She also directed technology communications at Meta, overseeing global engineering offices, data centers, infrastructure hardware, and sustainability initiatives.

She built out YC's investor receptions, community events and revamped Demo Days at the iconic SF Masonic. Before YC, she was the first marketing events hire at Mixpanel and spent 5 years building and leading the first marketing and events experience team. Before tech, she gained her deep knowledge of the event's industry from the inside as Senior Event Managers at Starwood and Marriott Hotels.

Joan DeGennaro

Joan plans and hosts high-impact events that drive results for startups, spanning marketing, recruiting, and community building. Previously, she spent five years at Y Combinator working on Startup School, Co-Founder Matching, and events to support early-stage founders. Before that, she held roles at Deepgram and Oscar Health, managing operations and partnerships. Her entry point into the startup world was as a founder in Y Combinator's W16 batch, where she led a nonprofit focused on sanitation access in rural India. She studied at Northwestern University and lives in SF, despite strongly identifying with the tri-state area (CT, NJ, NY).

Maria was the head of social media for Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) from 2022-2025. She also provided guidance for the companies in the a16z portfolio, Talent x Opportunity cohorts, and initiatives including Tech Week and "The Ben & Marc Show." Prior to a16z, Maria was a journalist and editor, who wrote for and worked at publications including CNN, CNBC, MarketWatch, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg.
